The New Virtual Medical Centre – An Australian First

Abstract

Virtual Medical Centre is the first of it’s kind in Australia, currently boasting eight separate disease centres providing information on cancer, cardiac, bone, gastro, blood, psych, infection and respiratory. Virtual Medical Centre is in the process of launching four more centres bringing the final count to 12 individual disease information centres under the Virtual Medical Centre brand.

All the centres which form VMC provide information 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. VMC is an online health and medical information resource and provides information on disease, drugs, new trials, breaking news, treatment, new and emerging therapies and events and conferences. The information is updated twice daily by a team of professional researchers. The content on the sites are contributes by doctors and the Editorial Advisory Board members.

virtualcancercentre.com was launched over 18 months ago by leading palliative care specialist Dr Andrew Dean and venchor capitalist Mr Wayne Hughes. The centre has been very successful to date with 10 pharmacutical companies sponsoring the site and a group of 95 oncologists sitting on the Cancer Editorial Advisory Board, which is 45% of all oncologists in Australia. Virtual Cancer Centre received over one million views per month which has been consistent for the last three months.

virtualcardiaccentre.com was launched on the 16th of April. Already Roche has taken up sponsorship with their product Dilatrend, used to treat heart failure. Dr Brendan McQuillan is the Medical Director of Cardiology and heads up the Cardiac Editorial Advisory Board consisting of 25 cardiologists from around Australia. Dr McQuillan attended the CSANZ 52nd Annual Scientific Meeting in Brisbane in August to promote virtualcardiaccentre.com.

virtualgastrocentre.com went live on Friday the 30th of April. The Medical Director of Gastroenterology is Dr Donald Ormonde who heads up the Gastro Editorial Advisory Board of 40 gastroenterologists.

virtualrespiratorycentre.com, virtualpsychcentre.com, virtualbloodcentre.com, virutalbonecentre.com, virtualinfectioncentre.com are headed up by Dr Eli Gabbay, Dr Nick De Felice, Dr Andrew McQuillan, Dr Rob Will and Dr Clay Goddress respectively.
