Overview:
This regime combines the two chemotherapy agents 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin, which work in different ways. 5-fluorouracil is an antimetabolite. It interferes with the cancer cell''s conversion of folic acid to folinic acid, its active form. Folinic acid is very important in the production of DNA, and without it cancer cells die and the tumour mass is reduced. Cisplatin is a platinum-based compound, which interferes with DNA structure and inhibits production of DNA. This leads to prevention of cell division and eventual cell death. This regime aims to combine these two mechanisms of action to result in greater tumour cell toxicity. For a spreadsheet schedule of the regime, 5-Fluorouracil+Cisplatin 5 Day, please click here.
