Overview:
| This regime combines two chemotherapeutic agents, Doxorubicin and Cyclophosphamide.Doxorubicin is an anthracycline. Anthracyclines act on DNA, blocking its production and inhibiting the enzyme responsible for DNA repair. Anthracyclines act on all cells, not just those actively dividing. Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent. Alkylating agents work on cancer cells in three different ways. Extra molecules, called alkyl groups, are added to DNA, causing it to break apart. DNA strands are prevented from separating, an important step in DNA replication. Bases (important components of DNA) are replaced, causing mismatching, which is another way to stop DNA being reproduced properly. This regime combines the mechanisms of action of these two agents, which results in greater tumour cell-killing effect. |
