About the Australian Lung Foundation
The Australian Lung Foundation (ALF) was established by a group of physicians in 1990 in response to the need in the community to reduce the significant and debilitating cost of lung disease, both in human and monetary terms. The ALF is recognised as the peak body in Australia for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which is responsible for the death of thousands of Australians annually and for adversely affecting the quality of life of hundreds of thousands whose COPD goes undiagnosed.
Vision and Mission
The ALF is committed to:
- Raising funds in support of medical research into lung disease.
- Distributing research findings and knowledge.
- Educating patients and the broader public on the treatment and prevention of lung disease.
- Fostering Patient Support Activities
- Influencing public and corporate policy to ensure a safe living and working environment.
Programs and Services
Programs and services include:
- Assistance of patients and carers around Australia
- Raising funds through special events and professional services
- Producing and distributing education leaflets
- Providing information on their website
- Organising meetings for doctors, other health professionals and the community to consider leading lung health issues
- Assisting clinical and consumer research, including clinical trials
- Assisting the production of national medical guidelines for disease diagnosis and treatment
- Creating and managing special lung disease programs
- Managing a national call centre and information assistance line (toll free hotline - 1800 654 301)
- Maintaining a national network of patient support groups for people with COPD and other lung conditions.
